Turning brilliant innovations into market-ready assets.
Most innovations never reach the market. Not because they lack value — but because the system forces the wrong path which assumes that all innovators want to be entrepreneurs.
at 8Cambridge we’ve built an ecosystem that does not assume that as we fully understand that idea creation, value development and commercialisation are different skills – rarely found in one person.
Instead of forcing innovators to build companies, we help them take their ideas just far enough to become valuable and then connect them with organisations ready to implement them.
This is what we call partial commercialisation and it represents a faster, lower-risk path to turning innovation into real-world value.
By bringing together three vital communities, we turn possibility into progress:
Innovators
You’ve created something valuable. You don’t have to build a company to prove it.
Many of the most important ideas come from people who are not entrepreneurs — researchers, engineers, clinicians and many others.
If you think your innovation has value then we will:
- Validate it rigorously
- Apply targeted expertise
- Build it into a tangible, valuable asset
- Sell it to an organisation that can use it
With 8Cambridge you stay focused on what you do best while we unlock the value of what you’ve created.
Experts
Apply your expertise where it creates real, measurable value.
Innovation doesn’t fail because of bad ideas, it fails because the right expertise isn’t applied at the right time.
At 8 Cambridge, we assemble focused teams of specialists to:
- Validate feasibility
- Shape commercial application
- Build structured, transferable assets
This involves short, high-impact engagements with clear outcomes allowing you to access direct value creation.
With 8Cambridge you’re not advising, you’re building value.
Corporations
Access de-risked innovation, without startup overhead.
Most corporate innovation efforts struggle with:
- Early-stage uncertainty
- Poor fit with internal systems
- High cost of experimentation
We deliver something different – pre-developed innovation assets that are:
- Technically validated
- Market tested
- Clearly positioned for implementation
With 8Cambridge you don’t invest in ideas.
You acquire validated opportunities ready to deploy.
Together, we accelerate ideas into market-ready opportunities.
Our solution
A different route to value
1. Validate
We rigorously assess the innovation – technically, commercially and practically – before significant resources are committed.
2. Build Value
We apply targeted expert input to develop the innovation into a medium-value, transferable asset which not a startup.
3. Transfer
We connect the asset with organisations that have the capability and need to implement it, enabling acquisition and real-world impact.
How 8 Cambridge Works
From idea → to validated asset → to real-world implementation.
Step 1
We apply structured, multi-dimensional validation at the outset:
- Technical feasibility: Does it actually work in a real-world context?
- Market relevance: Is there a clear and identifiable need?
- Commercial viability: Can value realistically be created and captured?
- Implementation pathway: Can an organisation adopt this without major friction?
This is not a surface-level review.
It’s a rigorous, evidence-based assessment designed to answer one question:
Is this worth building further, and if so, how?
Only innovations with clear potential move forward.
Step 2
We assemble small, focused teams of specialists to:
- Strengthen the core innovation
- Define its most valuable application
- Reduce technical and commercial risk
- Create structured, transferable outputs
Together they build a ‘medium-value’ asset:
- Clearly defined
- Properly validated
- Documented and transferable
- Ready for adoption
This stage is time-bound and outcome-driven, typically measured in weeks or months, not years.
Value is built deliberately, not speculatively.
Step 3
- We connect completed assets with organisations that:
- Already operate in the relevant market
- Have the infrastructure to implement
- Can extract value immediately
For the acquiring organisation, this means:
- Lower risk than early-stage innovation
- Faster time to deployment
- Clear alignment with existing capabilities
This means:
- More innovations reaching real-world use
- Less wasted potential
- Faster cycles of value creation
We don’t turn ideas into startups.
We turn ideas into assets that can be used.
Commercial Model - Shared value, aligned incentives.
At 8Cambridge, our model ensures that everyone who contributes to an innovation’s success benefits from its journey to market.
- Innovators receive recognition and a share of the value created when their ideas are commercialised.
- Experts are rewarded for their contribution of time, knowledge and skills – sharing in the success of the opportunities they help develop.
- Corporations gain access to a continuously curated pipeline of innovations that fit their strategic needs, reducing the cost, risk and time of sourcing solutions.
We operate on a value-sharing principle:
- Ideas are assessed and shaped within the platform.
- Once an opportunity is matched and developed, commercial arrangements are agreed with all parties.
- We optimise the sale price of each asset to maximise the value back to innovators.
- If we fail to commercialise the asset after an agreed period of time, the innovator regains all the intelligence created.
Identify value → Build it efficiently → Sell it to those who can use it → Reinvest to do it again

FAQ - Frequently Ask Questions
What are my responsibilities as an Innovator?
You have to complete the innovation discovery process which tells us all about your innovation and what you have done so far. The level of detail you supply will enable us to make the best evaluation of the potential of your idea.
How much control do I have over the commercialisation process?
The commercialisation process is managed by 8Cambridge and a set of experts who work on creating value from your innovation. They may need to consult you on some details that might need clarification. The system will keep you up to date with progress.
What kind of financial compensation can I expect?
Every party involved in the commercialisation process will be paid according to the value of their input. This value will be paid out in proportion when the idea is sold.
How much does it cost me an Innovator?
As an innovator it costs you nothing but your time.
What if I have multiple ideas?
The wonderful thing about this process as you are not involved in the commercialisation process you can focus on creating more innovations. There is no limit to the number you can submit.
What if I want to be involved in the commercialisation process, but don't want to be an entrepreneur?
You can become involved in the commercialisation process if you can provide the required skills need to complete one of the expert tasks.
How do you know if my idea is commercially viable?
We research a wide range of areas that can determine the commercial viability of your innovation and we make a decision using that output. If we decide not to move ahead, all the information you supply is returned to you and removed from our systems. You will also receive a report establishing why the idea was not selected.
Can I stop the commercialisation process if I change my mind?
Once you have submitted your innovation and we have decided to move ahead you do not have the ability to stop the effort to commercialise it.
What happens to my intellectual property (IP) after I submit it?
Once you submit your idea, your IP is taken in as part of a new venture. You will receive a share in the venture in return which will determine your compensation once the venture is sold.
How long does this commercialisation process normally take?
We plan for all commercialisation opportunities to be delivered within a maximum of 18 months.
What happens if my idea can’t be sold?
If after 18 months we can’t find a buyer for the innovation, we will return all data we have collected and developed to you so you can do with it what you wish!
What is the overall structure of the commercialisation process?
All ventures are evaluated at the outset in terms of the size and nature of the commercial opportunity. If this analysis is positive then a set of workstreams are created that are determined to drive value in the venture. Once a specific valuation goal has been acquired the venture is offered for sale.
How are expert partners selected and vetted?
Each of the value-creating workstreams will be linked to required skills and experience and these will be automatically matched to registered experts for
consideration.
What are the typical roles and responsibilities of an expert partner?
Each expert partner will be expected to deliver on the identified value creating workstream. An initial estimation of the work involved will be made and experts have to provide updates on progress as the venture develops.
How are teams formed for each innovation project?
Experts will generally work autonomously unless there are clear overlaps in workstreams.
How will communication be managed?
Each venture will have a dedicated coordinator who will manage the progress of each venture
Can I contribute to multiple innovation projects simultaneously?
As long as you have capacity you can be involved with as many ventures as you selected for.
How is the value of my contribution determined?
As the value workstreams are created, each will objectively be assigned a relative value and this may determine whether you want to be involved as an expert
What is the compensation structure for expert partners?
On sale, experts will be rewarded from the proceeds of the sale in relation to the value established at the outset.
How is confidentiality maintained throughout the process?
You will need to sign a non-disclosure agreement when you gain access to data about the venture linked to the value-creating workstream
What is the typical timeline from submission to commercialisation?
All innovations will be taken from idea to sale within 18 months
How do you protect the intellectual property of the innovations you work with?
All venture data is captured within a secure data room and all participants have secure access to their section. All participants need to sign non-disclosure agreements.
How is the valuation of the innovation determined?
Venture valuations are created from market data and financial analyses
What are the payment terms for innovators and expert partners?
All particpants in the commercialisation process will be paid as soon as the acquirer’s funds are transferred to 8 Cambridge
